Have you seen Hanbok in other mediums aside from clothing?
The Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (KCC) has officially opened its doors to Hanbok, Reborn as Art. This contemporary art exhibition breathes new life into Korea’s iconic traditional attire. Launched on July 10, 2026, at the KCC building in Taguig City, the showcase invites the public to explore the timeless elegance of the hanbok through a distinctly modern lens.
Organized by Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with the Savina Museum of Contemporary Art, the exhibition is free to the public and will run until September 26, 2026.
The ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ Hanbok Art
In these modern times, Hanbok which literally translates to Han (Korean) and Bok (Attire), is far more than mere clothing. Hanbok breathes the history, philosophy, and aesthetic identity of the Korean people. Over centuries, this garment has evolved and has been adapted in various forms to mirror the shifting spirit of each era.
The exhibition Hanbok, Reborn as Art challenges viewers to see this deep-rooted heritage from a completely new perspective. Eighteen contemporary Korean artists have deconstructed the traditional garment, using its intricate patterns, vivid color palettes, and distinct silhouettes as inspiration for cutting-edge paintings, sculptures, immersive installations, and video art.
A special Gayageum performance by artist JUBORA
During the exhibit opening, JUBORA, a gayageum artist and singer-songwriter, channels contemporary emotions and the senses of everyday life through the traditional Korean instrument gayageum. Some of the performances she showcased are Little Cabin in the Woods and the classic Arirang. Her cheerful personality perfectly fits the atmosphere of the exhibit, especially when she gave a message of encouragement to the audience before her last performance.
“If you are walking in a difficult season in your life, don’t be afraid. Just like a seed that’s starting to sprout, maybe your new beginning is closer than you think, so don’t be afraid. And I hope this music can bring you a little strength.” JUBORA
The Hanbok, Reborn As Art Exhibition
Before arriving in Manila, this Hanbok, Reborn as Art exhibition successfully captured global audiences in China, Kazakhstan, and Nigeria, proving the universal appeal of Korean tradition when blended with modern creativity. Following its Philippine run, the exhibition is scheduled to head to Malaysia later this year.
“This exhibition is a venue that introduces both the beauty of Korean traditional culture and the creativity of contemporary art through hanbok. We hope Filipino visitors will experience Korean culture in a more multidimensional way through this exhibition, and that cultural and artistic exchange between the two countries will continue to expand.” — Myeongjin Kim, Director of the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines

Oppa is Life is a page I created in 2019 when I felt the need for another virtual space to pour out my feels, musings and fangirl experiences. It started as a Facebook fanpage but I later on decided to open other social media accounts because a single Facebook page just doesn’t feel enough.
