Here’s a quick review I wrote after watching the film.

Synopsis

“Hopeless” is a 2023 South Korean neo-noir thriller directed by Kim Chang-hoon. The film follows the story of Yeon Gyu, an 18-year-old boy trapped in a violent hometown. Despite his desperate desire for a peaceful life with his mother, Yeon Gyu finds himself entangled in the world of crime when he seeks help from Chi Geon, a local gang middle boss. As Yeon Gyu navigates the dangerous path laid out by Chi Geon, he faces a conflict between his yearning for escape and the harsh reality of his circumstances.

Premiering at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, “Hopeless” explores the boundaries between hope and despair in a gripping narrative that unfolds against the backdrop of a crime-ridden town. The film, featuring Hong Xabin in his debut role, also stars Song Joong Ki and Bibi.

Momentous Premier

“Hopeless” made its debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 24, 2023, as part of the Un Certain Regard section. Additionally, it received an invitation to be showcased at the 28th Busan International Film Festival in the ‘Korean Cinema Today – Special Premiere’ section.

Song Joong Ki as Chi Geon

It was reported that Song Joong Ki agreed to not receive any pay for his role in the film. Despite that, his character is one of the lead in the movie so you shouldn’t miss the chance to watch it.

Hong Xa Bin’s first lead role

Actor Hong Xa Bin made a number of appearances in Korean dramas including Jirisan. Duty After School, Moving and the film Tune in for Love but the film “Hopeless” is his biggest breakthrough in his career.

What should you expect from the film?

Since this is a noir thriller film, expect numerous dark back stories and a few tear-jerking moments from the characters. Even if I am a person who barely enjoys this type of film and the jump scares aren’t really my thing, I still enjoyed the storyline of the two-hour film.

“Hopeless” is now available in numerous selected cinemas nationwide. The film is brought to us by Viva International Pictures.
