The vibrant hues of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, are currently captivating the attention of Filipinos as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in collaboration with the National Hangeul Museum and the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines, presents a “Hangeul”-centered exhibition.
This cultural showcase, titled “Hangeul Design Project – Reinterpreting Hangeul in The Modern Era,” gracefully unfolds at the Korean Cultural Center in Manila, commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the Philippines.
The exhibition, which opened its doors on September 5th, has already welcomed a diverse audience, including prominent figures from the Philippine arts and cultural scene. The exhibition itself is a testament to the versatility and enduring appeal of Hangeul.
Visitors are treated to a captivating array of creative interpretations, where the Korean alphabet is transformed into stunning works of art across various mediums. From graphic design that playfully reimagines the letters to innovative furniture pieces seamlessly integrating Hangeul elements, the exhibition showcases the boundless creativity of Korean artists.
One of the showstoppers is “한HAN글文” by Han Hae-yeong, an installation that symbolizes Hangeul as a gateway to new worlds, inviting viewers on a visual journey of discovery. Another captivating piece is “됴찬쇼” by Lee Seul-gi, which ingeniously utilizes everyday accessories to form intriguing words, blurring the lines between art and play.
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the exhibition aims to deepen public understanding of Hangeul’s historical and cultural significance. As a uniquely Korean invention, Hangeul stands as a testament to the nation’s rich intellectual heritage. Its creation, attributed to King Sejong the Great in the 15th century, revolutionized literacy rates in Korea and empowered the common people with access to knowledge and information.
